The pathway to VCU Health for John McCurley, M.D., MHA, included a 24-year career in the U.S. Navy and work in some unique locations: a nuclear-powered submarine, the east wing of the White House, the U.S. Capitol and Supreme Court, to name a few.

But no matter where he has been in his Naval or health care career, the one thing he brings forward from his time spent in the Navy is an unwavering commitment to a team-based approach to problem solving.

As VCU Health recognizes all our team members and their families who have served or are active duty in the Armed Forces, Dr. McCurley took a few moments to share his thoughts on the significance of Veterans Day and to thank his fellow veterans for their service to our country and the VCU Health mission.

"As a veteran, I appreciate that we have a day set aside where we honor the colleagues of mine that have served, and those that are serving. The men and women that that have done that, I respect a great deal and I'm thankful for them,” said McCurley, the vice president and chief medical officer of health system transformation for VCU Health and interim president of VCU Medical Center. "We owe to a very small number of people a great debt in the protection of our freedom."
